This semester, Alpha Tau Omega has continued the great progress made by the former philanthropy chair, Seif Shahidain, and is looking forward to great new events, trips, and fundraisers. Each semester, the brothers of Alpha Tau Omega are required to meet a minimum of 15 hours of philanthropy and many exceed this number by leaps and bounds. We have maintained a great relationship with the Samuel L. Jones Boys and Girls Club of Metro Atlanta through our weekly service trips. Every Wednesday, a group of brothers heads over to play games and help tutor as an afternoon activity. In addition, we have also started volunteering every week at PAWS Atlanta, a local animal shelter, where we walk and play with abandoned dogs.
These service trips provide a healthy routine of philanthropy but we also like to mix things up by scheduling other events throughout the year. The Charles Harris Run for Leukemia, which benefits cancer research at Emory University, is one of the favorites among brothers, and this year we had a great turnout for the event, runners and volunteers included. We hope to continue volunteering at the road race for many years to come. Our main event, called “Dooley Presents” was a huge success this year. Over 300 students came and watched Emory acapella and dance groups perform at Glenn Memorial Church. This event was in its second year running and we managed to raise over $1600 for the Boys and Girls Club. We also look forward to our cosponsored event with a fellow sorority, “Kicks for CASA." This kickball tournament benefits the Court Appointed Special Advocates program and is a great way to usher in the spring season.
Next fall, we hope to continue our traditional events, “Chill and Grill” and “Mile of Change." The combination of these events has raised over $1200 in past years for our various charitable organizations. Also, many brothers have expressed interest in working with Habitat for Humanity, and it seems as though next year will be just as busy as this one for ATO.
Please feel free to contact me with questions and concerns and don’t hesitate to inform us of great new event ideas.
Sincerely,
Michael Galaburda
ATO Philanthropy Chair
Other events from the Social Service Program this year:
Mile of Change
Mile of Change is a coin drive that involves the Emory community by utilizing Wonderful Wednesday and other public events. The goal of the event was to make a string of change that is one mile long. Over $250 was raised for the Boys and Girls Club of Atlanta.
Kicks for CASA
On April 20th, ATO cosponsored a kickball tournament with the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. There was food, music (performances by brothers Adam Hoffman and Matt Lipkins), and kickball. Prizes were given to the winners. Over $1425 was raised for the Court Appointed Special Advocates, a program that protects minors within the legal system.
Greeks Go Green
Alpha Theta’s own Nicolai Lundy co-founded this sustainability initiative. It consists of a weeklong competition among Greeks to recycle as much as possible and conserve energy.
Relay for Life
This great event is a campus-wide fundraiser for cancer research hosted by Colleges Against Cancer and the American Cancer Society. ATO held a booth at this all night relay around the track field and this year we raised $400 for the cause. Roughly 25 brothers participate in the festivities and vigil each year.
Charles Harris Run for Leukemia
Eleven brothers volunteered for our second year at this road race that benefits Leukemia research at Emory's Cancer Institute. Brothers directed traffic, handed out t-shirts, and a few ran in the race. The Harris family has come to our fraternity for the past two years knowing that they would find volunteers; we hope continue participating in this event for years to come.
Chill and Grill
We once again teamed up with the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and grilled out during Emory's “Wonderful Wednesdays." Students going to and fro from class stop by and bought hot dogs and burgers for $3. This year many brothers took turns cooking for four hour shifts and we managed to raise $706.
PAWS Atlanta
Brothers visit the PAWS (Progressive Animal Welfare Society) center each Saturday to play with and help take care of abandoned pets. ATO has set up visits with other Greek organizations, such as sororities Kappa Alpha Theta and Kappa Kappa Gamma. On April 27th, ATO teamed up with PAWsive Outreach, a student organization that arranges trips to homes for the elderly with puppies from local animal shelters, to host the Puppy Petting Zoo on campus.
